Five hundred years ago, the necromancers of Thermopylae committed their greatest blasphemy: they raised the corpses of their dead and bid them slaughter their enemies. Three hundred years ago, Grand Magus Strauss summoned three spirits from the depths and bound them so that they would serve humanity: one to a helmet, one to a shield, one to a sword. Seven days ago, the portal opened and a swarm of demonic Pfhor spilled like guts into Fort Marathon, until then thought impregnable. Now, something that had once been a man made its way to the quarantined area, opened doors long sealed shut, and, finally, stepped through.

"Wield me, and I shall give you the power you need to slaughter your foes," said the most treacherous of the spirits to the last of the revenants. "It has to beat shambling around like your brain has leaked out of your ears. Which I imagine it probably has centuries ago. Seriously, you almost remind me of Tycho. Only empty air in there."

He would wield the sword, the revenant decided. If only so he could chuck it into the first lava pool he came across.

Maybe those damn things had a use after all.

Ooooooh, that is BADASS art. *_________* SO STRIKING, and definitely the perfect image for this story! Which has a wonderfully evocative opening - AND THEN DURANDAL HAS TO RUIN IT, BUT IN THE BEST WAY. Oh, Durandal. :DDDDDDDDDD AMAZING ALL AROUND.

Oh, wow, I love this - the art is great (such clean lines!) and the backstory is a wonderful fusion of Marathon + fantasy elements. (I especially like that the three AIs were bound one to a helmet, one to a shield, one to a sword.) Durandal's sarkiness is just as delightful in sword form; I only hope the SO can put up with him long enough to figure out that they do work well together.

Honestly, he's lucky Durandal comes in a more portable form in this AU. It's hard to hold an AI core over a lava pool.
